if you meet me, have some courtesy
have some sympathy and some taste
use all yr well-learned politesse or i'll lay yr soul to waste
...
in my favorite
hunter s. thompson novel
fear and loathing in las vegas, the characters raoul duke and dr. gonzo are driving in their convertible, listening to sympathy for the devil over and over, tripping on lsd and trying to overcome everything that bewilders inside their imagination. sympathy for the devil is one of those perfect songs for losing yr mind and then regaining conscience.
the original
rolling stones version, gave a special kind of intensity combining overtones of voodoo spells and prayer. not surprisingly, when it was first released in 1968 on beggars banquet, many christians thought the stones were satan worshippers. mick jagger casually spoke of the ways sympathy for the devil came to be due to the sophisticated inspiration gathered from mikhail bulgakov's literature of good and evil,
the master and margarita.
today, many have given their own distinctive sound to the stylings we all once knew and loved. although these covers could never top the magic of the original, its nice to see the different ways these artists created their very own samba sound.
